President's
Letter...
Welcome to 2008! A new year always brings with it thoughts of fresh
starts, new experiences, plans to set and reach goals and a
lingering wish that you had passed on that second (or third!)
helping of mashed potatoes during the holidays. While there isn’t
much we can do to help you recover from the potatoes, all of us at
NAPM-Western Washington do hope we can help you attain some of the
other goals you set for yourself for this upcoming year. One area
that I will be focusing on personally in 2008 is in education. I’ve
always enjoyed taking classes, reading, doing research for papers,
and working with teammates on projects. Within the next year I plan
to take the next steps toward joining an MBA program. On a less
intense level, I am also looking forward to understanding what the
CPSM certification is all about by taking, and hopefully passing,
the bridge exam when it is offered by ISM. In addition to those
goals, I am really looking forward to the NAPM-WW line-up of
programs that we have scheduled over the next five months. We’re
going to have some very strong programs in price/cost analysis,
negotiations, best practices in lean manufacturing and leadership.
I hope you are able to join us at these events. I have always
believed that a person’s education should not stop when he or she is
handed a diploma. Adults need to maintain their competitive edge
throughout their careers by continuing to build their knowledge base
and by meeting new people and making new connections in their field
and community. Never has this been as critical as it is today in
our quickly changing business environments and NAPM-WW is working to
provide our members with opportunities to do both.
I wish each of you
a safe and happy new year and I hope that you achieve all that you
set out to accomplish in 2008.
Sincerely,
Heather C. Rai

You know the
old British proverb: You can lead a horse to water, but you
can't make it drink. Don’t try to make the horse drink. Try to
make it thirsty. As professionals engaged daily in purchasing
and negotiating, how can you persuade the key stakeholders in
your company, negotiate with outside suppliers, and create
thirst for what you are recommending?
Practical tips
in this presentation include
1. The
presentation model developed recently for Boeing supply managers
by the speaker called NORAD, which focuses on 5 questions
involving needs, objectives, resources, analysis, and decisions.
2. Three powerful e-mail techniques for writing messages that
connect with the reader immediately, create thirst, and invite
positive responses.
3. Speaking and voice techniques that let you sound as decisive,
confident, and persuasive as anyone you’ve ever heard on radio
or television.
An illustrated handout with practical tips included will be
provided for all who attend this event.
